#8 Referral or apply first? Do this.

Problem: Referrals help you stand out amongst applicants - but waiting for one stalls momentum.

Why it matters: Shortlists often fill early. Many referral systems only add a flag in the ATS. Speed + clarity gets you seen.

TL;DR: Apply first. Then send the same 2–3 sentence blurb to either (a) a hiring manager/recruiter or (b) a warm contact to forward/flag. Company referral policies vary—ask your contact how they’d like to handle it.

Timing rule:

  • Warm contact who replies in 2–3 days? Ask first. If no reply, apply and send the blurb.

  • Weak tie / no contact? Apply, then send the blurb.

  • <7 days old posting: speed > referral.

  • >14 days: referral first can help.

Write this once (your blurb):

“I focus on [problems] at [stage/altitude]. I get traction by [how]—recently [one proof/outcome]. I’m keen on [this role/company] because [specific tie to their product/metric].” (If you applied, say so: “Applied today: Job [ID].”)

Send it to:

  • Hiring manager / recruiter (direct): use the blurb as the whole note.

  • Warm contact (after you applied): “I applied to [Role] (Job [ID]). If it looks aligned, could you forward the blurb below to the HM or flag my app?” + paste the blurb.

  • Warm contact (ask first):Open to referring me? Here’s a blurb you can forward. If I don’t hear back in 2–3 days, I’ll apply and send the Job ID - happy to follow your policy.”

That’s it. That's the whole note. Short, specific, proof-backed.

Follow-up (3–5 days later):

One small value nudge: “Saw [relevant note/post]; I’d start with [tiny idea tied to their metric].”

Basic bump: "I know how quickly things disappear on here, just wanted to be sure you saw this."

Kind note on policies: Many teams can link a referral after you apply; bonus rules may still require submitting the referral first. Ask your contact how they want to handle it.

Visibility over permission. Speed + clarity beats perfect timing.

Happy networking,

Mel
