#10 Your End-of-Week Check-In: What’s Draining You? What’s Fuelling You?

When I ask clients what they want next, a lot of them say: “Basically my current role—just without the churn, bureaucracy, or stress.”
Yep. I hear you. But if we really want to do something about it, we have to go deeper.
It’s not enough to know you’re tired of the chaos. You have to pinpoint:
What about your current role is draining the life out of you.
And what energizes you - where you’re in flow, adding the most value.
The End-of-Day Energy Check
Here’s a simple practice you can run for a week:
Track your day.
Each evening, jot down the main activities. Mark each one:
🟢 Energizing → lifted you up, time flew.
🟡 Neutral → steady, neither here nor there.
🔴 Draining → left you flat or frustrated.
Add a note.
Why did it feel that way? Was it the task, the people, the process, or just the sheer volume of it?
At week’s end, reflect.
Ask yourself:
What patterns do I notice?
What do I want more of in my next role?
What do I want less of?
Why it matters
Chances are, the work that energizes you also is also a strength of yours.
The check-in is a chance to ask:
Is this a strength I already know about—and can I lean into it more?
Is this an underused muscle I could build on?
Or is it something I normally love (like mentoring others) that’s gotten out of balance - e.g. 15 direct reports is too many, no matter how good you are at coaching.
The draining work matters too. Sometimes it’s a weakness (or stuff you just plain don't enjoy); other times it’s simply the wrong conditions - bureaucracy, constant churn, endless fire drills. Knowing the difference helps you make smarter choices about what to change, what to delegate, and what to leave behind in your next role or as you evolve your current one.
As you finish this week, don’t just tally what you delivered. Notice what fueled you and what flattened you. That’s the raw material for a role that’s not just “less stressful” - but one where you actually thrive.
