Any progress is still progress

The clients I work with don’t lack motivation or the ability to set goals. They know how to do both of those things in spades. It’s what has made them the highly successful professionals that they are.

And yet, they have dreams – be it that they want to leave behind the golden handcuffs, start their own businesses, secure financial independence, etc. – that they aren’t making progress on.

The thing they want is something that they ‘should be doing’ rather than a thing that they ‘are doing’.

In times like these – it is important to acknowledge that ANY progress is still progress.

Yes, it helps if you have a plan. Yes, it helps that you approach things methodically.

But when you are stuck. When you look at the first action item on the list and you cringe, skip it. Move onto something you can do. Some questions that can help:

  • What’s one thing you can do to make progress?

  • What part of this is most important right now?

  • Who can help? If there is someone in your circle who has done this before, could give you feedback, help you skip steps, etc. Get them involved or set up time with them. Not only does this help with accountability but learning from others helps you move faster.

Now that you have your task, what’s your trigger to get it done? By trigger, I mean your tried-and-true approach to ensuring you do it. Whatever that is. Use it.

For me, it’s my diary. If I block some time in the calendar, even 30 minutes, then I know I’ll at least start on it. Is your trigger a note by your mirror? Or a line on the household to-do list? Comment below.

Repeat this process until you are squarely in the doing zone and out of the should zone.
