I checked the calendar today and it’s basically Q4. With holiday sales periods, family engagements or holidays looming, it may seem an odd question – but when was the last time you checked in with yourself on your job? Was it at review time in March/April?

Before the rest of the year whizzes by and you’re back at annual review – take 30 minutes and practice a bit of good career hygiene.

Here’s my short list of questions for a quick career check in:

  • Do I enjoy the work I am doing?

  • Do I like my manager, skip-level manager and peers?

  • Of all the things I am working on – what project/goal am I most excited or engaged by?

  • If I could change anything about my current role, what would it be?

  • How is my performance?

  • Does the scope of my existing role enable promotion/is there promotion potential?

  • What do I need to do to take the next step?

  • Do my work goals align with my manager/organization? Can I see how they are connected?

  • Do I want to change roles or grow where I am?

I’ve used this list many times to identify opportunities and as a starting point for career chats with coaches, mentors and managers. Now I use it with clients to help them step back and check in.
